Tell me I'm not the only one who...

Postby Hathersage » Tue Feb 02, 2010 12:28 pm

has a child who will go off and do her worksheets by herself any old way she pleases?
She wrote all over tomorrow's math assignments, and although capable of following directions can only do so if I'm RIGHT there, otherwise she does her unique math of her own creation. I knew she was like this therefore this was one reason I went with Math Mammoth so I could print them out as I needed them. I'm still paranoid that I'll find her writing all over the CWP workbooks I bought.(OOP) I'm going to sell these, because I know I'll completely lose it if she does this.

Or the the GWG that just arrived. What am I going to do??! She is 6, btw.

I don't know if it would help but I gave mine a dry erase board to do all their marking on and then they only wrote the answer on the work sheet. I got them a smaller one so they could carry it around since all three of my kids like to do their schoolwork all over the place. My middle daughter (age 10) still writes big and if she doens't use the board to her math pages are not legible by the time she is done.

Well, she knows not to write in the workbooks, I'm just not sure that is going to stop her when my back is turned. She's hasn't written in any other books, nor did I give her workbooks or any kind as of yet. She just has this habit of getting her work out and doing it while I'm off somewhere else. And she wouldn't mean to do exactly, but she doesn't *get* it yet. And I feel like I'm constantly mean, and she'll end up hating to do her schoolwork, which she thinks of as play time right now. I tried having her do her problems on a dry erase board, but it is easier for her to write directly on the page, which for the things I print out is fine. As long as I only print out one day at time. I guess maybe if I put page protectors over the worksheets I'd be ok...hmmm.

You're not the only one. :)

I will read the instructions with my son, such as "Color the pictures whose names rhyme". But he'll circle instead, or connect them. I've just sort of given up on being strict about instructions, because I know that he knows the concepts.

I have a kid who does his math in code - kid you not.

He made me a code translator - he gets it right - but it is a monumental PITA for me to figure it out.

We've come to an understanding about what is appropriate and what isn't -

I understand about being a code translator!
Lately, it has been all about the math jokes.

I overheard her saying 2+2=5, and I said "huh?" and she replied "its a joke Mom, 2+2+4."

Don't have that problem, lol. I do, however, have a problem with a 15 yr old who thinks he already knows how to do certain science experiments and will use up all my supplies doing them wrong, because he won't bother with reading the directions.

I will add, I have never homeschooled a 6 yr old, but next year, I will. I am worried this will happen now. Thanks! LOL.

LOL - we've had to completely reassess the way we do school in some ways. At least your kid (in some form or fashion) will actually DO the work... mine will stare off into space until someone is rightthere making sure he's working. Since we changed our approach, he's getting better at working indepedently (my oldest is 8, youngest 7). The white board is a good idea. We have an honest to goodness chalkboard in our school room that the boys love to use, too. That saves us a ton on printing worksheets. :)
