My favorite find, Lauren Bacall reading James Thurber's 13 Clocks, you can find it here:

Anyone else find some treasures on audio? I'm looking to add to my listening list...

I'm listening to Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman right now, on the recommendation of the audiobook knitters group at Ravelry.

Audiobooks are our favorites! I'd love to find "Audiobook as Literature, a Homeschool Curriculum." ( it doesn't exist that I know of...)
Have you heard of "Movies as Literature"? It sounds very cool, but I haven't tried it yet. Do you know of any Lit. curriculum for 6th grade and up??? I am looking for something more secular than what I have found so far. But, would really like something for homeschoolers because I am not able to be left to think up questions on my own, lol!!

We have an audiobook, a read aloud, and independent reading going on at all times. We are currently listening to The Mysterious Benedict Society. The kids do not like the reader on this one. He has a cadance that bothers them. We just finished a read aloud, so I have to go down and pull another off the shelf to start.

Tiselput, I have a 6th grader who loves to read. I don't use a curriculum for her reading. I have her read books that we choose together. Sometimes she will do a report on the book, write an alternate ending, give an oral review, or some other activity. When I can find comprehension questions online for a book, I might use them. We are more likely to use vocabulary from a book that to have her answer a lot of questions. I often use the questions as discusion questions, rather than having her write out answers. I try to read everything my kids read before they read it, so I am a very busy reader. I read so much for them that I rarely read for myself, anymore.

Hey Heather
Thanks for the response. I love the idea of thinking outside the box, but have trouble doing it with confidence. I keep thinking "what if I am NOT doing stuff I should be doing?" Am I the only one who worries about that kind of stuff? What about in high school? Will you do different then? I am really stressing out because my son is finishing 7th and only 1 more year til high school. I have just been letting them read books, and we almost always have an audio book in the car and sometimes house too! They have finished the Warriors series and are reading Star Wars books and vidoe game guides right now, lol! They do love to read, but can be picky sometimes, but not with audio books their range is broader with them.
I am thinking this last year before high school for him I want to have more fun with school, so I will prob. attempt they way you said it. It sounds so freeing and self-discovering....thanks! I love it when another mom can bring me down from my high of stress!!

I just picked up Movies As Literature. I don't know how much we'll use it, but I figured if we were going to watch the movie anyway, we might as well do something with it. It also helped that I was able to obtain said book for only $5.00. Not a bad deal.

We got into the habit a few years back of listening to audiobooks while eating lunch. This way the kids are doing something and not bouncing around. They listen better. They eat better, and I get to eat, too. For a while I found that our audiobooks were killing our read aloud time. It was just easier to pop in a CD and I was getting a little lazy. Now I keep a set time for audiobooks and it doesn't cut into time for anything else.

I just found this website www.teachwithmovies.com it looks really great. They have 300 movies titles to choose lesson plans for using at home. It does cost an annual fee, but it's not too bad if you don't want to have to search for everything you want to watch.
$5 is a deal for Movies As Lit. I haven't seen it for less than $15 :)

I've bookmarked a lot of things over the years like this. I never seem to get around to going back and reading them. I guess it's like the mail. Better to take care of it when you bring it inside and only handle it once, to make sure you get to it all. When will I learn?
