Gluten Free Snacks For HS Gatherings?

Postby Saille » Thu Jan 28, 2010 10:32 am

So, we hold local secular homeschooler Park Days...which crap out as soon as it starts to snow. And if you look slightly to the left, you'll notice that, where I live, it mostly snows.

One die-hard mama friend with four kids began swapping back and forth with me. One Friday afternoon at my house, one at hers. Which is working out great, but they're gluten-free. I've been buying gluten-free bake mixes at our teensy health food store. They're freeking expensive. But somehow, I'm thinking non-sweeties won't be as popular after weeks of us both baking gluten-free snacks. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

Wow, this is an old post. Thought I'd answer anyway, just for the heck of it. :) We have a family in our group who eats gluten-free as well. One I wouldn't have thought of is good ol' potato chips! :D Yes indeed, plain chips. Not every time, perhaps, but they do fit the bill (read labels on flavoured chips, I know malt vinegar has gluten, for example). Make your own dip or hummus and you're set. I also do crudites and dip/hummus, or cut up fruits and a nut- or yogurt-based dip. Nuts, olives and cheese cubes can work, too, but be careful of the cheese - read labels. You can find tons of great GF recipes online; a friend makes an awesome quinoa cold salad! YUM. Brown rice salads work well also. In the summer, cold fruit teas might suffice for a playdate, and there's always popsicles, watermelon, etc.
